The third round of the U.S. Open is underway, and a number of the game’s biggest stars are in contention to win the year’s third major. Gary Woodland held a two-shot lead at the halfway point after shooting nine-under 133 for the first two rounds—one shot lower than Tiger Woods shot when he won by 15 here in 2000—but Justin Rose, Louis Oosthuizen, Rory McIlroy, Matt Kuchar, Brooks Koepka and a host of other contenders are hot on his heels.

Tiger Woods will need to make up some ground, as he sat at even par through 36 holes. Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth enter Saturday at one under, while Dustin Johnson, the pre-tournament favorite, is a two under.

Pebble Beach is home to some of golf’s most iconic backdrops and is hosting the US Open for the sixth time. Koepka is fresh off a victory at this year’s unseasonably early PGA Championship and is also the back-to-back winner of the US Open. He might not land all of the headlines, but he’s one of the hottest golfers in the world.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, got off to a slow start in Round 1, posting a -1 in what he described as “grinding it out.” He’s on pace for a similar performance in Round 2.

Justin Rose is up a few strokes in the back-half of his second day at Pebble Beach. The Englishman won the US Open in 2013 but is less than a year removed from lifting the Claret Jug at the Open Championship. If he gets far enough ahead, the field will have their work cut out for them.
